Butterfly Model of Dementia Care at Cardinal Place:
Growth, Connection & Compassionate Care
As spring arrives, April brings a renewed sense of energy, connection, and joy here at Cardinal Place. With brighter days and blooming surroundings, our community continues to focus on what matters most, creating meaningful moments and providing compassionate, person-centred care for every Member (resident). We are implementing the Butterfly Model of Care on our Memory Care Floor that focuses on "Feelings matter most".
🌼 Celebrating the Season of Renewal
From spring crafts and music to social gatherings and time outdoors, our Members are embracing the season in ways that support both physical and emotional well-being. Whether it’s enjoying a sunny afternoon, sharing stories with friends, or participating in engaging activities, April is filled with opportunities to connect and thrive.
🦋 Leading the Way with the Butterfly Model of Dementia Care
At Cardinal Place, we are proud to introduce a new concept in compassionate dementia care, implementing the Butterfly Model of Care on our Memory Care floor; an innovative approach that puts emotions at the heart of care.
Developed by Meaningful Care Matters over 20 years ago, this model shifts away from traditional clinical routines and focuses on one powerful belief, introduced by Dr. David Sheard:
“Feelings matter most.”
While dementia may affect memory and cognitive abilities, emotional intelligence remains. The Butterfly Model recognizes this and encourages meaningful, emotional connections between residents and caregivers; moving from simply “doing for” to truly “being with.”
💛 What The Butterfly Model Means at Cardinal Place
We are continuously learning, evolving, and integrating this model into our daily care. Our goal is to enhance each member’s quality of life by supporting not only their physical needs, but their emotional well-being as well.
Key elements of our approach include:
- Attached Leadership – Our leaders and team members are actively engaged with Members, fostering connection rather than distance
- A More Personal Environment – We create a warm, homelike atmosphere filled with familiarity, comfort, and personal touches
- Recognizable, Approachable Staff – While moving away from traditional clinical uniforms, our team wears coordinated, casual attire to remain approachable while still easily identifiable
- Small, Consistent Living Groups – Promoting safety, comfort, and stronger relationships
- Flexible Daily Living – Routines are guided by residents’ needs and preferences, not strict schedules
- Enjoyable Mealtimes – Dining is a social, relaxed experience—not just a task
🌟 The Butterfly Model Impact
The Butterfly Model has shown meaningful results in care communities around the world, and we are already seeing the positive impact here at Cardinal Place:
- Improved emotional well-being and engagement
- Reduced anxiety and distress by addressing emotional needs
- Stronger connections between residents, staff, and families
- A more positive, welcoming environment
- Potential reduction in medication reliance
- Improved nutrition and overall health
As the saying goes, “People will forget what you said… but people will never forget how you made them feel.” This philosophy guides everything we do.
🌱 A Future Built on Compassion
Becoming a fully accredited Butterfly Home is a journey, and while Cardinal Place is currently in the evaluation stage, we are committed to exploring how this model can further enhance the lives of our Members.
This transformation is about more than care, it’s about creating a culture rooted in dignity, empathy, and love.
